Install Varnish cache HTTP CentOS 7



Varnish HTTP Cache is a proxy server dedicated to HTTP caching. The powerful HTTP accelerator can serve as a reverse proxy for your Apache or Nginx web server.


Install Varnish cache HTTP on CentOS 7


Install EPEL repository using the following command.

yum -y install epel-release


Now install Varnish from the EPEL repository using yum command below.

yum -y install varnish



After the installation is complete, start Varnish and add it to launch at system boot using the systemctl commands below.

systemctl start varnish
systemctl enable varnish



Configure Varnish as a reverse proxy for Apache

This will install Varnish and we will now configure it as the reverse proxy for the Apache web server. Varnish runs on the default HTTP port 80.

Go to the Varnish configuration directory and edit the default configuration in ‘default.vcl’.

cd /etc/varnish
nano default.vcl
backend default {
     .host = "";
     .port = "8080";


nano varnish.params


Save and exit.

Now restart Varnish and check stats using the netstat command.

systemctl restart varnish
netstat -plntu
